Freelancers Union

Freelancers Union is a national nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that represents the needs and concerns of America’s growing independent workforce through advocacy, information and service. Independent workers—freelancers, consultants, independent contractors, temps, part-timers, contingent employees and the self-employed—currently make up about 30% of the nation’s workforce. We exist because we believe that freelancers can help each other. Whether it’s forming a group to get a lower rate on insurance, or answering each other’s professional questions, everyone does better through cooperation. By coming together in Freelancers Union, independent workers also achieve visibility. The organization works to educate policymakers and the public about the needs of freelancers. We advocate for policy changes, and through our surveys, we do research on the independent workforce that no one else is doing. Now, we’re helping freelancers to come together in a nationwide online community to find work and share their knowledge. In fall 2006, we’ll begin to offer life and disability insurance throughout the U.S., with health and dental insurance expanding on a state-by-state basis.
